In 1873, Southern Pacific Railroad extended its line to Tres Pinos, running two
passenger and two freight trains per day. This created a busy shipping center,
attracting hay brokers, stockmen, grain dealers and cattle buyers. On any given
business day, the small town of 600 people would swell to a population of 2000.
The railroad built a hotel and
restaurant, and soon there were six saloons (one of them illegal). Mercantile
stores began to appear, along with an ice cream parlor, a butcher’s shop,
barbershops, blacksmiths, a town doctor and even a weekly newspaper, The Tres
Pinos Tribune. The town boasted seven enormous grain warehouses, a scale house,
and a bullfighting arena.
The Inn at Tres Pinos was built in
1880 and was at one time a brothel, until it was raided by federal officers.
The Inn was a favorite site of cowboys and teamsters, who appreciated
the fine food and jovial atmosphere. Many successful cattle deals were
made over a few drinks at the bar.
Today The Inn is a Historical
Landmark and focal point to the “Cienega Valley Loop,” made up of 6 exceptional
San Benito County wineries: Donati Estate, Enz, Calera, Pietra Santa, Flint Wine
Cellars and DeRose Vineyards. Owner
Mike Howard
has carefully restored The Inn to keep its original charm while adding
touches that reflect his personal interests. It’s country with a touch of class,
intimate, rustic and elegant.
The Inn at Tres Pinos is located 5
miles south of Hollister, less than an hour’s drive from either San Jose or
Monterey. Tres Pinos is commonly referred to as the gateway to southern San
Benito County, home of Pinnacles National Monument. Pinnacles is known for its
diversity of wildlife and more than 30 miles of trails that access unique rock
formations and spectacular vistas. San Benito County Fairgrounds and Thousand
